Connecting to Your True Self: “The Question”
October 4, 2007 True Self 1 CommentIn his book, The Gift of Being Yourself, author, spiritual director, and psychotherapist David Benner writes, “Self-transformation is always preceded by self-acceptance. And the self you must accept is the self that you actually and truly are – before you start you self-improvement projects!” In other words, the wholeness adventure begins with connecting to your true self, who you are underneath all the masks, roles, and carefully crafted personnas. The story, “The Question,” puts us in touch with just how important connecting to our true self is. The story goes like this…
When Rabbi Zusya, the great Hasidic master, grew old and new that his time on earth was drawing to a close, his students were called around him. Timidly one of them spoke and asked Rabbi Zuysa what he was most afraid of about dying.
“I am most afraid of what they will ask me when I get to heaven,” he answered.
“What will they ask you?” the disciples were eager to know.
“They will not ask me, ‘Zusya, why were you not like Moses?’ ” he answered. ”They will ask me, ‘Zusya, why were you not Zusya?’ ”
When you come to the end of your life, will you be asked “The Question?” Connecting to your true self has eternal ramifications!
