Jim’s Reflections

The story of the “Dragon’s Tear” touched me because most of my life my looks and my voice, shaped by a cleft lip and palate, have caused me to feel like a dragon. As a child I warred with peers who teased me and with parents who rejected and abused me. As an adult I have warred with the inner demons caused by rejection and abuse. For years the real “me” hid in a cave filled with loneliness and pain.

But over time, three “shepherds” discovered my cave and sang me songs of love that slowly drew me into the light and produced healing tears. One shepherd is my wife, whose song of love has held me fast, just as I am, scars, demons and all. Another shepherd was my counselor whose words of wisdom and love penetrated my thick scales and reached my deepest wounds. The third Shepherd is Jesus, who found me and has carried me closed to his heart.

So now, encircled by those who love me, I tell stories to those who need them, hoping that my stories and tears will help them heal, so none of us will have to die alone and afraid.

Yes, the story of “The Dragon’s Tear” is my story, and I tell it with hope.
