As kids, we learn to embrace the negative voice because it helps make sense of the bad feelings, anger and fear. "I feel bad because I am bad." It is a familiar monster we are drawn to, rather than the loving stranger (the man on the blue bike). It takes a leap of faith to begin to listen to the kind stranger.
