I think of Leo Tolstoy's tale of the shoemaker who wonders when he has met Jesus... since he recalls only ministering to ordinary people in everyday life. Your tale, Jim, springs from the same moral vision of the great Russian teller.

In a way, perhaps you now have to end to your own feet. Wash them, soothe them, sock them. They too are the feet of Jesus.

True Voice is a beautiful story and I loved the way you tied it in with the work you do with kids in crisis. As kids, we learn to embrace the negative voice because it helps make sense of the bad feelings, anger and fear. "I feel bad because I am bad." It is a familiar monster we are drawn to, rather than the loving stranger (the man on the blue bike). It takes a leap of faith to begin to listen to the kind stranger. Thanks for helping me hear the love in the voices of birds today.

Thank you Jim for your inpiring stories, which I can easily relate to my personal life and my workplace as well. Your stories truly reach the inner soul and can be easily applied towards making one a better person and this world a better place to live in as well.

So many people feel that they have nothing to offer (low self-esteem)so they make up things or exaggerate. Not realizing that we are all special in Gods eyes with unique qualities and tatents all our own. So just be who you are (use what God gave us). We are all special and need to learn more self worth.

One time, when I told this story in a jail, a Muslim stood up in the middle of my telling and shouted "Praise Allah!" I said, "Amen" and kept on telling! :)

I met and studied under Walter Wangerin. He's an even better storyteller than he is a writer. Fantastic teacher. A highlight of my education.
